Position description
Barrett students who are accepted to this program will have appointments for the academic year starting in the fall semester. Through these appointments, students will collaborate with an HonorHealth investigator on a research project. No stipend is associated with these appointments, as the students receive credit for their participation through enrollment in HON 498 HonorHealth Research Student.
Eligibility
Exceptional Arizona State University (ASU) Barrett Honors College students are eligible for participation. Applicants must:
- Be an active Barrett honors student in good standing. Third and fourth year Barrett student at time of appointment preferred.
- Have a grade point average of at least a 3.0 (4.0 scale).
- Be able to register for HON 498 for 3 credits during semester of appointment.
- Are considering a biomedical research career as a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.
- Can devote at least 10 hours per week to the research project at the HonorHealth facility.
If applicants are planning a thesis, students must have an ASU faculty co-director for the thesis if the HonorHealth investigator does not have an academic affiliation with ASU.
Applications will be initially reviewed by Barrett, The Honors College and eligible applicants will be submitted to HonorHealth for final review and selection.
Application must include:
- A personal statement describing your interest in the Academic Affairs programs at HonorHealth.
- A copy of your transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
- One signed letter of recommendation on letterhead (from a current or previous supervisor or faculty member).
Upon acceptance of their application packet, a student may be asked to:
- Complete the required background investigation for volunteering in an HonorHealth facility
- Complete the onboarding and orientation program, as required by HonorHealth
Expectations and Objectives
Participants will be expected to:
- Complete all on boarding requirements and associated costs for testing prior to the first day of classes for each term.
- Complete required CITI training as requested by HonorHealth.
- Register for the appropriate credits through HON 498.
- Show up on time and prepared to all agreed-upon hours of research work.
- Competently complete all research work on time.
- Be responsive to the assigned mentor, as related to their project.
- After project completion, fill out an evaluation form with any critical or positive feedback to be used to better the program for future student participants.
Mentors will:
- Be available and offer guidance to the student, as related to their project.
- Ensure student has adequate resources and access to complete their project.
- Provide an evaluation of the work completed by the student at the end of the project.
