What is the difference between Graduate Commencement, Undergraduate Commencement and Convocation?

  • University Graduate and Undergraduate Commencement -  are the university-wide ceremonies at which President Crow confers degrees.
  • At Graduate Commencement, doctoral graduates have their names read and cross the stage at Graduate Commencement. Master degree candidates will be announced by college, but not individually.
  • At Undergraduate Commencement, undergraduates are presented by college, but not individually.
  • Convocation events, hosted by colleges, are celebrations of individual achievement where graduate names are called and graduates cross the stage.
  • Celebrations are held by and for various student groups and are open to all graduating students.
    • Convocation and Celebration times and locations are subject to change.

Who may walk in the Barrett Convocation

Barrett graduates who turn in their final signed honors thesis/creative project are eligible to participate in the ceremony. Please contact your Barrett Honors Advisor to confirm eligibility at 480-965-9155 prior to the week of the ceremony.

Is there a limit to the number of guests at Convocation? Do guests need tickets for the Convocation ceremony?

Due to the increased number of students participating in the Barrett Convocation, entrance into the ASU Gammage Auditorium will require tickets, which will be available at no charge, for all attending guests.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no limit to the number of guests students may invite to attend the convocation.  However, each guest must be present to receive their ticket.

Tickets will be distributed at the Southwest walkway outside of ASU Gammage (see map below). Attendees can pick up their tickets starting 30 minutes before doors open, no earlier.  Doors to the event will open at 11:00am.  Fifteen minutes after the event starts, tickets can be picked up at either entrance to the theatre from House Staff.

Accessible needs will be accommodated at time of ticket pick up. Patrons that require ADA seating can be accompanied by one companion.

How do I file (or apply) for graduation? What does that mean?

Filing (or applying) for graduation tells the University that you plan to graduate this semester and have all of the credits and coursework completed to qualify. The Fall 2025 Graduation Filing Deadline is October 1st, 2025.

  • Undergraduate: $100 ($25 for each additional concurrent degree)
  • Graduate: $100 ($25 for each additional concurrent degree)
  • Late fee, if applicable: $35

Where do I get my cap and gown?

Graduates must wear an official ASU cap and gown during the Convocation ceremony. See http://colleges.herffjones.com/college/_arizonastate/ for information about graduation regalia.

What should I wear with my cap and gown?

Graduates are encouraged to dress 'business professional' under their cap and gown for ceremonies. Please be careful when choosing footwear. Please visit University Ceremonies website for more information about academic regalia.

I think I'm supposed to have an honor cord- what is this? Where do I get it?

Honor cords are for undergraduates who have earned at least 56 credit hours of resident credit at ASU. Your current GPA as verified at the time you request your honor cords will determine which cords you are given. For more information, visit Graduation Ceremonies.

On-campus students can pick up honor cords at any University Registrar Services location.

ASU Online students who have earned honor cords will receive them via mail. They will be mailed automatically to eligible students based on the requirements listed on the website above.

What time should I arrive at Gammage Auditorium? Where do we meet?

Gammage Auditorium doors will open one hour prior to the ceremony for both graduates and guests. Graduates will receive an email with detailed instructions on where and when to report for the processional in December. Graduates will report by 11:00 a.m. wearing cap and gown with business attire, and comfortable shoes. Graduates should not bring purses or valuables as there is no place to secure them. We expect graduates to be in place in line no later than 45 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony so that the processional can begin on time.

Will I get my diploma at Commencement or Convocation?

Diplomas will be mailed approximately 7-10 weeks after the end of the semester to the permanent address on file with the registrar's office. At Convocation, you will receive a diploma cover with a letter from the Dean.

Will my photo or video be taken during Convocation? Is there a professional photographer or videographer?

Professional photographers from Grad Images will take photos of graduates as they process onto stage and as they cross stage and accept their diploma cover. These photos are available for purchase after the ceremony. Grad Images will email all graduates with information about the photos that were taken within 48 hours of the ceremony. For more information, visit the Grad Images website. Complimentary in-person photos with Grad Images will be offered at all campuses this semester. Please visit https://graduation.asu.edu/ceremonies/memories for more information.

What if I need special accommodations?

If you (the graduate) need special accommodations or have a disability, please indicate on your Marching Order form and we will make arrangements to accommodate your needs.

If one of your guests will need special accommodations, please inform them that they will need to arrive early (doors open one hour prior to the start of the ceremony) and staff at Gammage Auditorium will assist them with special seating. The arena is wheelchair accessible. Seating for patrons with a physical disability is available in all facilities.

Where should I park?

Parking lots are nearby for those driving to the Auditorium, including ADA parking. Large attendance at ceremonies will create traffic. Exiting parking lots and parking structures will be delayed. Your patience and cooperation is appreciated. Parking maps and additional parking information is available online.
