Honors External Examiners

About the program

The Honors External Examiner program encourages and funds the inclusion of distinguished scholars in the honors thesis/creative project process, enriching partner departments and enhancing both their visibility and their excellent students to nationally recognized experts at other universities.

To participate in this program, the thesis/creative project mentor and his/her honors student should request support from the honors college for including an Honors External Examiner on the honors committee. Barrett will provide up to $1500 for each examiner. The request should include the name and institution of the proposed Honors External Examiner, a brief statement of his/her expertise in relation to the honors project, a proposed date for the visit, and estimated expenses (include transportation, lodging, meals, and honorarium of $250).

Details

The Honors External Examiner should be contacted at least 12 weeks in advance of the defense and must receive the thesis/creative project at least 8 weeks before the defense. The Honors External Examiner will provide feedback on the thesis and participate in determining whether the student successfully defends the thesis. He/she will be provided a modest honorarium for this work ($250).

The Honors External Examiner will be brought to ASU for the defense and to meet with honors students in the department/unit of the student defending (one or two days and nights). These meetings may be formal or informal and may include meals. All arrangements for the Honors External Examiner will be made by the host department and funded by the honors external examiner fund in Barrett, The Honors College (airfare, lodging, meals). These visitors are to benefit the students of a department not give public lectures.
