About this opportunity

The Department of Finance offers many options for W. P. Carey honors students. Each semester, the department offers FIN 303 which counts toward the requirements of the finance major.  Additionally, FIN 493 thesis project credit may count toward major elective requirements. The Finance department operates the Intel Collaborative Thesis Program and Investment Portfolio Management program and offers special consideration to honors students applying to the Investment Banking Industry Scholars (IBIS) program. Each of these programs offers students the opportunity to learn hands-on about a particular field of finance and interact with professionals in that field.

Thesis

Generally, theses competed in the Department of Finance are scholarly research projects involving an analysis that is presented in written form. Many students chose to complete a group thesis, including those participating in the Intel Collaborative Thesis Program in which honors students in teams of three to five are paired with Intel employees in a real-time work environment applying their knowledge to active business cases. The department requires a two-person thesis committee. The thesis director must be a WP Carey Fiance faculty member and the second committee member can be any individual with sufficient expertise in the thesis topic.

Academic Preparation

There are no required courses to complete before embarking on thesis projects, but it is recommended that students consider selecting electives that match their planned thesis topic. Students are encouraged to take the Honors sections of the WP Carey core classes.

Recommended Timeline

It is recommended that students begin exploring thesis topics in their second and third years of study. The majority of students complete a thesis in their final two years of undergraduate study.
