The Human Event

Our signature first year seminar

The Human Event is a year-long course that forms the foundation of the first-year honors experience. All first-year Barrett students are required to take The Human Event, a small, intensive, interdisciplinary, discussion-based seminar that focuses on important social and intellectual currents in the history of human thought from the earliest written texts to the present.

Your academic support team

Barrett students benefit from a three-pronged approach to academic advising. Each Barrett student is supported academically by a:

* When you meet with an advisor in the college of your major to discuss your first semester class schedule, be certain that it includes HON 171: The Human Event.

Next steps

  • Enroll in an open section of HON 171 this fall offered at the campus of your major.
  • Review the honors curriculum and consider how you would like to earn honors credits beyond HON 171 this fall. **
  • Look out for an email from Barrett Advising in early August, inviting you to schedule your first mandatory honors advising appointment.

** We recommend an Honors Enrichment Contract, which is an arrangement you make with a professor to complete an additional assignment or project in a class to earn honors credit. This is your opportunity to spend more time on an interesting topic and get to know faculty. When classes begin in August, ask your instructors about Honors Enrichment Contracts and arrange a contract in one of your classes.
