About this opportunity

The Department of Management & Entrepreneurship is a broad based department that is the home for three different W. P. Carey degrees; B.S. Management (Tempe, Polytechnic, West), B.S. Business Entrepreneurship (Tempe), and B.A. Human Resource Management (Polytechnic). The level of focus in our classes ranges broadly from individuals, groups, teams and departments to firms, industries and national economies. Accordingly, opportunities for Barrett students are equally wide.

Any Barrett student who is considering majoring or minoring in Management or Entrepreneurship should contact the lead FHA Dr. James Moore.

Thesis

Given the broad based and often interdisciplinary nature of our work within the Department past Barrett Honors Thesis projects are varied. We have both traditional academic research thesis projects and many thesis projects from our department. Examples could be projects developed based on student experiences while studying abroad or in their internships. Practical application and interdisciplinary projects are welcome.

The Department requires two faculty members. The second faculty member can be from any unit on campus. An optional third committee member can be anyone with sufficient expertise in the thesis topic.

Academic Preparation

A W. P. Carey student would normally need to have completed either MGT 300, MGT 303 or MGT 380 to begin the thesis process with one of the Department's faculty members.

Recommended Timeline

Typically students begin work on their thesis one year out from graduation. By the end of their junior year it is expected that the student has identified an area of focus and a thesis committee. Students would take MGT 492 and MGT 493 (or ENT 492 and ENT 493) over two consecutive semesters.

Other Honors Opportunities

MGT 303 is the Department’s core course that is open to all students in W. P. Carey. All ENT, LES, MGT and WPC courses taught by our faculty, with the exception of MGT 300, may allow honors enrichment contracts to the discretion of the instructor, and as long as the instructor is a full-time faculty member.

Additionally, W. P. Carey is proud to offer a specialized honors version of core business curriculum. This honors version, offered in Fall and Spring semesters, takes a deeper dive into course material and allows students to engage on a higher level with their faculty and peers. Students of all business majors are able to access these courses:

  • ACC 261 Honors Fundamentals of Financial Accounting covers ACC 231/232
  • ACC 271 Honors Fundamentals of Managerial Accounting covers ACC 241/242
