About this opportunity

The BA program in international letters and cultures with a concentration in Arabic studies provides critical and cultural diversity in advanced Arabic language and literature.

This concentration complements existing degree programs in the School of International Letters and Cultures and enhances studies in social science disciplines such as political science and global studies, as well as many humanities fields, including anthropology, history, philosophy and religious studies. The program provides a broad knowledge and understanding of the culture, literature and traditions of the vast Arabic-speaking world.

Thesis

No matter what career lies in your future, knowledge of another language and culture will give you an advantage as a citizen and professional. The thesis can explore a variety of topics and be presented to in many formats. Students work closely with their thesis director on the topic, plan of action, and project deliverables. 

Academic Preparation

Depending on your topic, it is a good idea to complete upper-division courses in Arabic. Students will enroll in 492 and 493 for thesis research and thesis defense and final submission. 

Recommended Timeline

Students fare best when they begin thinking about their project as early as their freshman year. By their sophomore year, students will want to have a topic identified and begin to locate faculty with whom they would like to work with on said topic. By fall of junior year, students will assembly their committee and begin to map out a completion plan for their project with the committee. Students may want to use the summer between their junior and senior years to start work on their project. Student must complete their project by mid spring of senior year. 

Other Honors Opportunities

Students can learn about faculty research in SILC and are encouraged to apply for undergraduate research opportunities. Many SILC courses offer honors enrichment contracts. 

Dr. Umar Sulayman is a dedicated Fulbright scholar with extensive experience in teaching Arabic, English, and Linguistics. He has worked with may Barrett students on Honors research teaches in the School of International Letters and Cultures.
