About this opportunity

Justice and Social Inquiry (aka Justice Studies) offers students an opportunity to examine the roots of social injustices while providing the tools to work toward the attainment of justice for all.
As a student in the interdisciplinary Justice and Social Inquiry programs you will study social justice and learn about the historical, political, cultural and social forces that shape our society.

You’ll explore legal and social philosophies of justice while learning new methods for conducting justice studies research. You can also take a range of justice studies electives, such as justice-seeking organizations, ethnic studies and disability rights.

In doing so, you will find that we at JSI:

*reveal the intersecting forms of injustice by examining their historical and current sources

*engage multiple visions of justice knowing that no one solution works for everyone

*transform pathways to justice by empowering communities and helping those silenced by inequality

Our bachelor’s program takes a unique approach to the study of justice by revealing, engaging and transforming society  - we offer both the BA and the BS. Please click here for more information on the program: BA https://sst.asu.edu/degree/undergrad/ba-justice-studies

or the BS: https://sst.asu.edu/degree/undergrad/bs-justice-studies

Thesis

We value student initiative and creativity at JSI and thus we are open to a variety of formats for the Honors Thesis or Project (including but not limited to qualitative/quantitive research papers, graphic novellas, film/media projects, multi-media projects). JSI faculty are happy to serve as your thesis chair or committee member.

Academic Preparation

Students must work with their JSI Thesis Director to decide the requirements of and format for your thesis/project.

Recommended Timeline

Students fare best when they begin thinking about their project as early as their freshman year. By their sophomore year, students will want to have a topic identified and begin to locate faculty with whom they would like to work with on said topic. By fall of junior year, students will assembly their committee and begin to map out a completion plan for their project with the committee. Students may want to use the summer between their junior and senior years to collect data/work on their project. Student must complete their project by mid spring senior year (though later completion dates may be approved by the students Director).

Other Honors Opportunities

All JSI faculty welcome you to discuss the possibility of completing an Honors Contract for said class. The type and length of such projects are created on a case-to-case basis with the instructor. Please note, at this time, SST/JSI Graduate Teaching Associates are not eligible to oversee Honors Contracts or Thesis.

JSI also provides a variety of internships in a diverse settings such as attorney's offices, non-profit programs, school and foster programs. Also, many JSI faculty are open to working with students on research projects as well.
