About this opportunity

The BA in film and media studies in ASU's Department of English provides a comprehensive analysis of film, television, digital media and screenwriting. It develops students into critically informed writers, storytellers, critics and consumers of film and media.

The program teaches students skill sets such as project research, critical thinking and effective crafting of media messages, which can lead to employment opportunities in a wide range of fields.

Thesis

A typical Honors thesis in FMS is either a critical essay, creative project, or a combination of the two. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are acceptable. The unit has the same requirements as Barrett of an ASU faculty member thesis director and a second committee member who can be faculty, staff, or a qualified professional in the field of study.

Academic Preparation

Students should have successfully completed at least one FMS course related to the medium central to their project prior to beginning the thesis.

Examples of suggested courses are FMS 100 for film, FMS 351 for digital studies and FMS 300 for television.

Recommended Timeline

Students should be prepared to develop their topic and committee by Spring of their Junior Year and to work on the thesis in the Summer, Fall, and Spring of their Senior year.

Other Honors Opportunities

Honors enrichment contracts are set up on a case-by-case basis with individual FMS faculty. We have a strong internship program in FMS. Email Ruby Macksoud, Director of Internships for FMS, at [email protected] to learn more about those opportunities.
